Chapter 7

I stand in the doorway with a stunned look on my face, curiosity taking a close second to the panic I’m feeling right now.

“Jason? What are you doing here?” I ask.

My heart is practically pounding out of my chest while I wait to see why he’s here. Hopefully not checking up on me.

“Hey, Mel.” His tone is casual and relaxed, allowing me to take a deep breath knowing he’s not onto me. “I was walking Mattie home. She was worried about you, but I didn’t want her walking alone.”

“Yeah, I thought you’d be back by now,” Mattie says.

“Oh yeah, well…I decided to walk along the beach and enjoy the quiet. The fresh air really helped my headache so I decided to sit down there for a while.”

“You’re feeling better?” Jason asks. “You didn’t drink too much, did you?”

“No, I told you I would behave myself.”

“Good. And now that you two ladies are back safe and sound I’ll head out.”

I panic again for a moment, thinking about how I usually give Jason a hug when we say goodbye. Even though I’ve been in the water, it’s possible that I smell like Luke. Not that Jason would know what Luke smells like, but he would recognize that I smell like a guy.

“Have a good rest of your night,” I say, leaning in and giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.

“You too.” He turns and waves, already bounding down the stairs.

Once he’s out of sight, I quickly walk into the room and close the door behind me.

“All right, spill.” Mattie turns to me as soon as the door clicks shut.

“What do you mean, spill?” I grab a hair-tie out of my purse that I left on the desk and pull my hair up.

“I mean, what’s going on with you tonight? Who did you sneak out to see?”

“It wasn’t like that. I was tired of the party scene and wanted some quiet. That’s all.” I flop down on the bed and grab the remote control. Pressing the “on” button, I start channel-surfing, hoping I can distract her enough to keep her from realizing that there are things I’m trying to hide.

“You’re a terrible liar, you know. If it was just a headache, I would have gone with you. Like Jason said, you shouldn’t be walking around by yourself at night.” She comes over and sits on the other bed, leaning against the headboard. “Now spill. Who were you with tonight?”

I look at her sheepishly, knowing I can’t continue to deny what I’ve been up to. She’s right, I am a terrible liar. “I was with Luke,” I say.

She just stares at me with a stunned look on her face.

“Really?” she asks, a huge smile spreading across her face while she sits on the edge of the bed at complete attention for the rest of the story. “You guys hooked up?”

“We kissed and messed around a bit but not anything too serious. But you can’t tell anyone else. Not the girls and you can’t mention it when we’re around Jason.
